Our Story | Real Cuckoo Clocks

For more than 40 years, Cuckoo’s Nest has been welcoming visitors from around the world at our shop and café on Vor Singersbach in Gutach. What began as a small family business has grown into one of the Black Forest’s most loved destinations for authentic cuckoo clocks — yet it has never lost the personal touch that makes every visit feel like a discovery.

The Black Forest is the birthplace of the cuckoo clock. The craft traces its origins to the long winters of the 17th century, when farming families in the Schwarzwald supplemented their income by carving wooden clock parts. By the 18th century, entire villages were engaged in the trade — men carving cases, women hand-painting dials, children fitting tiny gears. The iconic chalet style we know today was codified in the 1850s, and it has changed remarkably little since.

Direct from the Makers

We work directly with master clockmakers and workshops based in the Black Forest region. Every clock in our collection is finished and quality-checked by hand before it leaves Germany. By working closely with the makers — not through intermediaries — we can stand fully behind every piece we sell and offer you genuine Black Forest craftsmanship at fair prices.
